Math Type by
Product Description
MathType
is a powerful interactive equation editor for Windows and Macintosh
that lets you create mathematical notation for word processing, web
pages, desktop publishing, presentations, elearning, and for TeX,
LaTeX, and MathML documents.

MathType for Windows
Principal Characteristics
Works with over 350 Applications & Websites:
MathType currently works with over 350
word processing, presentation, email, calculation, elearning products,
and others and we're adding more every day.
Top 10 applications and websites
MathType for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
If your favorite application or website is not in the list, MathType
probably still works with it using one of the general techniques and
mechanisms listed below.
- Insert Object (OLE): Many applications have an Insert
Object command that allows MathType equations to be inserted into their
documents just as in Microsoft Word and other Office applications. This
is also called OLE (Object Linking and Embedding).
- Cut, copy, and paste: Any application that lets you
paste an image from the clipboard will work with MathType, allowing you
to insert equations into literally thousands of document types.
- Drag and drop: Just like cut and paste, drag and drop can be used to put equations in many kinds of documents.
- Equation image files: MathType can save equations as
image files in these formats: EPS, GIF, or WMF. Many applications allow
you to import these into their documents.
- MathML, TeX, LaTeX import and export: Now you can
import and export mathematics defined using MathML or TeX to/from the
many applications that work with those formats. MathML code can be
either in the new MathML Clipboard Format that is supported by a
growing number of mathematical and scientific applications or plain
text such as from an XML editor, for example. MathML or TeX can be
imported via cut and paste or drag and drop.
- Translators for TeX, MathML, Maple, Mathematica,
MATLAB, Gmail, Physics Forum and more: MathType has many built-in
translators that adapt it to work with various languages, products, and
websites. We are continuing to develop new translators and, using our
MathType SDK, you can customize them or create your own.
More Ways to Create Equations
- Entering Math by Hand:
Enter equations as easily as you would write math with paper and
pencil! This feature uses the built-in handwriting recognition in
Windows 7: If you are using Windows 7 you can use a tablet PC, your
mouse, or a Wacom tablet
to enter handwritten math directly into MathType.
- Point-and-Click Editing with Automatic Formatting:
Create equations quickly by choosing templates from MathType's palettes
and typing into their empty slots. MathType applies mathematical
spacing rules automatically as you type.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Save time using keyboard
shortcuts. MathType has customizable keyboard shortcuts for virtually
every symbol, template, and command.
- Type TeX or LaTeX: If you
already know the TeX typesetting language, you can enter equations
directly into MathType or Microsoft Word documents. TeX editing can be
mixed with point-and-click editing so you get the best of both worlds.
You can even paste in equations from existing TeX documents.
- Copy-and-Paste: If you created your equation in
another application or found one on a website, why take the time to
create it by hand again? Simply copy-and-paste it directly into
MathType, and it is ready to edit or use in your work.
- Save Expressions in the Toolbar: Drag frequently used
equations and expressions to the MathType toolbar so they can be
inserted later with just a click or a keystroke.
- Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010 — MathType Ribbon
Tab in Word and PowerPoint: MathType takes full advantage of Office's
Ribbon User Interface making it easier than ever to do equation
operations in documents and presentations. New equation numbering and
browse features work with all Word equation types.
- Microsoft Office 2003 and XP (2002) — MathType
Toolbar and Menu in Word and PowerPoint: MathType adds a toolbar and
menu to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, allowing quick access to its
features and powerful commands to do equation numbering, produce
great-looking math web pages, presentations, and much more.
- Find Symbols: MathType's Insert Symbol dialog allows
you to explore the available symbols and insert them with a click or
keystroke.
More Control
- Color: Use color to highlight part of an equation and
focus your audience's attention on just the portions you want. Show
what changed in each step of a multi-step procedure and make those
equations really come to life.
- More Fonts: MathType has hundreds more symbols and
templates than Equation Editor. Besides our exclusive Euclid™ math
fonts, you can also make use of the 1000s of math symbols in fonts
already on your computer, as well as other math fonts you can download
from the Internet.

System Technical Requirements
Windows
- Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit), Windows Vista, or XP.
- 12 MB free hard disk space.

Math Type for Macintosh
Principal Characteristics
Works with Many Applications
- Many Applications: In addition to Apple iWork '09, Microsoft Word
and PowerPoint, use MathType to add equations to QuarkXPress and Adobe
InDesign layouts, Excel spreadsheets, HTML pages, and many more
applications and document types. Click here for more information about the most popular.
- Works with Wikipedia: Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia,
contains 1000s of pages with mathematical equations. Once you do your
research on Wikipedia, you can copy the relevant equations for use in
your own work. You can also use MathType to author new equations for
Wikipedia.
- MathType is compatible with many, many other
applications – virtually any application that accepts one or more of
the following import techniques:
- Cut, copy, and paste: Any application that lets you
paste an image from the clipboard will work with MathType, allowing you
to insert equations into literally thousands of document types.
- Drag and drop: Just like cut and paste, drag and drop can be used to put equations into many kinds of documents.
- Image files: MathType can save equations as image
files in these formats: EPS, GIF, or PICT. Many applications allow you
to import these into their documents.
- Translation to MathML, TeX, and LaTeX: MathType's
customizable translators allow you to convert equations into these
popular formats for use in applications that accept them.
More Symbols, Templates, and Fonts
- More Fonts: MathType has hundreds more symbols and
templates than Equation Editor. Beside our exclusive Euclid™ math
fonts, you can also make use of the 1000s of math symbols in fonts
already on your computer, as well as math fonts you can download from

- Find Symbols: MathType's Insert Symbol dialog allows
you to explore the available symbols and insert them with a click or
keystroke.
- Search for characters based on words in their Unicode
description: MathType contains a database of character descriptions and
knowledge of what characters are contained in most math fonts. For
example, search for "less" to see the many variations of the <
symbol.
Two Ways to Create Equations
- Point-and-Click Editing with Automatic
Formatting: Equations can be created quickly by choosing templates from
MathType's palettes and typing into their empty slots. MathType applies
mathematical spacing rules automatically as you type.
- Type TeX or LaTeX: If you already know the TeX typesetting language,
you can enter equations quickly using MathType's TeX input mode. TeX
editing can be mixed with point-and-click editing so you get the best
of both worlds. You can also paste in equations from existing TeX
documents.
Saves Time
- Save Expressions in the Toolbar: Drag frequently used
equations and expressions to the MathType toolbar so they can be
inserted later with just a click or a keystroke.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: MathType has customizable keyboard shortcuts for virtually every symbol, template, and command.
- Intel Mac and Leopard (OS X 10.5) Support: MathType
is a Universal application supporting both Intel and PowerPC Macs with
fast native code. MathType works with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later,
