TSP through the Looking Glass
What is it?
TSP through the Looking Glass is a separate Windows program
that is now bundled with TSP 4.4. It provides a Windows environment
for developing batch programs. TSP through the Looking Glass
is designed to make it easier to develop your batch files by
allowing you to:
- switch between input and output files, and see them on the same screen
- run TSP without leaving the editing environment
- quickly find comments, data, etc. with the color coded input window
- edit your input file using cut and paste, automated comment and indenting
global changes, etc.
- open and work on several TSP files at the same time

How do i get it?
TSP through the Looking Glass is now bundled with TSP 4.4.
You can get it by upgrading to TSP 4.4. TSP through the Looking
Glass is currently available for Windows 95, Windows NT and
Windows 3.1. We have begun preliminary work on porting TSP through
the Looking Glass to the Mac OS. If you are interested in being
an alpha-tester for the Mac OS version of TSP through the Looking
Glass please contact us.
Why does it only work in batch mode?
The philosophy behind TSP and its Windows interface is that
of a programming language tailored to econometric problems.
The developers of TSP believe the most useful research tool
is one that documents what you have done and makes it easy to
produce datasets and econometric results that can be replicated
by rerunning the program.
For this reason, although we feel that working in an interactive
GUI environment is useful for some exploratory work and for
learning a program, it is not suited for conducting a full scale
research project. The ideal program will be able to blend a
combination of these two approaches, and we are working towards
this end in future releases.
Future developments
In the future, TSP through the Looking Glass will be tailored
to TSP, with a set of menu commands that allow the novice (or
experienced user) to construct TSP programs in an interactive
manner. Also, a third window will be added to the interface
to support more data display options.
